Researching teachers learning to teach Mathematics and Science

This project is exploring the learning and changes in practice and identity that a teacher goes through in the first three years of teaching mathematics and science in the compulsory years of secondary school. This includes new teachers teaching mathematics and/or science, as well as experienced teachers who have just started teaching mathematics and/or science. We are particularly interested in teachers for which mathematics and/or science are not their specialised method areas. This three year project intends to examine also the teacher in context in order to understand relationships between teacher perceptions and school and education policies and practices.

Outcomes of the project will inform the development of system and school policy and practice in dealing with teacher learning when teaching a subject for the first time.

The research project is being conducted by a team of seven researchers from three universities: Deakin University, University of New England and the Queensland University of Technology.
